Government to make domestic testing of telecom equipment mandatory in 2015

The government is planning to make domestic testing of all telecom equipment mandatory from 2015. It has started the process of setting up a pilot lab at Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru to develop test standards, procedures and test tools for testing telecom equipment. This will be upgraded to a telecom testing and security certification centre to enable telecom providers to have their equipment tested in India after April 1, 2015.

Further, the government has identified 13 sectors as critical infrastructure for improving cyber security. . National Critical Information Infrastructure Centre under the National Technical Research Organisation will look into the increased security of the critical infrastructure. Apart from this, the government is persuading Indian internet service providers (ISP) to locate their servers in the country to increase security. In addition, it has also set up a laboratory at Kolkata which has already issued three internationally recognised certificates on cyber security to ISPs.

Presently, more than 85 per cent of telecom equipment is imported, which have an annual valuation of about Rs 750 billion. Meanwhile, telecom operators are allowed to test this equipment from any laboratory including those located overseas.
